Majoring in the Minors

Like millions of others around the world, you probably watched at least part of the royal wedding last weekend. By many accounts, Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon was among the highlights. At one point, he said, “When love is the way, we will let justice roll down like a mighty stream and righteousness like an everflowing brook.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. expressed a similar thought in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, when he said, “We will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.”

Both statements are powerful, but few people are aware that these words first came from one of the lesser-known books of the Old Testament, specifically from the prophet Amos (5:24). Amos is one of those small, often-overlooked Old Testament prophetic books that are sometimes called “Minor Prophets.” They get this designation because their writings are relatively short, but there’s nothing minor about the message that they proclaim.
