Eyes, Teeth, and Cheeks

We’re all familiar with the expression “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth.” It comes from the Old Testament, and refers to the idea that punishment or recompense should match an offense that has been committed. This makes sense, and is a basic element of justice.
But Jesus challenged that notion when he instructed his followers to “turn the other cheek.” That is, if someone slaps you, offer them the other cheek. If you are forced to walk a mile, go the second mile with them.
These are difficult, challenging words to take seriously. But its core, that’s the point: our faith is not simply a matter of subscribing to a set of beliefs. The call to follow Jesus is a matter of living out our faith. This is not an easy pathway, it will cramp our style, but we will be transformed by God’s grace at work in us!
