Me, Worry?
I’m not generally a worrier, but we all have our moments. Sometimes, for example, when it seems like all of life’s i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed, I worry that perhaps I’m actually forgetting something significant. When there’s nothing to worry about, I get suspicious!
For some of us, worry has become a big part of life. According to one recent study, two out of every five Americans say they worry every day.
One of the major problems is that in our own mind worrying helps to prevent bad things from happening. People commonly worry about the possibility of a plane crash, for example. Since plane crashes are relatively rare, we infer a cause-effect connection between our worry and the infrequency of crashes. By contrast, we worry far less about car accidents, even though they are statistically far more common.
Jesus reminds us that worrying won’t add a single second to our life. But even if it doesn’t do much good, it’s hard to stop. Some of us may even be worried about our worrying! As Jesus suggests, it’s helpful for us to learn to live with some uncertainty about life and the future. This is the essence of entrusting God with our life. Remember: God cares more about you than about the birds of the air or the grass of the field!
Blessings,
