Logs and Splinters

You’ve heard the judgmental comments people make:

“Why don’t they discipline their children?”

“Does he realize how ridiculous he looks wearing that?”

“They’re taking another vacation? How can they afford that?”

And chances are, we’ve been part of conversations like this from time to time. As Jesus so vividly illustrated, it’s often much easier for us to see the splinter in someone else’s eye than the log in our own eye.

What is hard for us to see is that what we say about others says a lot about ourselves. In fact, we tend to judge other people in areas where we are weakest. Pointing out our flaws that we see in others seems to help us feel better about our own struggles.

The next time you catch yourself making a comment about someone, use that opportunity to reflect on your own life. Is this an area of growth for me? How can I make the change that I’d like to see in others?
