Stone Soup

Stone Soup

There’s an old story about some hungry travelers who came to a village, only to find that none of the villagers would share any food with them. The travelers had a cooking pot, so they filled it with water, dropped a large stone in it, and placed it over a fire.

The villagers were curious about the “stone soup” on the fire, so the travelers agreed to share some of it if the villagers would be willing to add some ingredients to the pot. One person shared some carrots, another added potatoes, someone contributed meat, others threw in spices, and so on. Before long, the travelers removed the stone and a delicious soup was the result, ready to be shared with everyone.

Quite often, we are tempted to think that we really don’t have a lot. After all, we can easily point to so many people around us who seem to be doing so much better at life than ourselves. But we forget that God is really good at producing big results out of small things. Better yet: God is really good at producing big results out of our small things.

But this requires that we be willing to offer what we have–what little it is–to God. Too often, life becomes a matter of what we can get out of it. Instead, what will you bring to the pot?

Blessings,
Pastor Paul Cook
