Blue Christmas

Blue Christmas

You’ve probably heard Elvis Presley’s song “Blue Christmas,” but the experience of sadness during the holiday has been around much longer than the song. People have often observed what is sometimes known as the “longest night,” in conjunction with the Winter Solstice on December 21st. This day is marked by the shortest amount of daylight all year, and it serves as an appropriate symbol of the sadness that so many feel at Christmas.

The truth is, Christmas is not always merry for everyone. Many who have lost loved ones find the holidays especially difficult. Some are forced to be separated from their closest family and friends. And others find themselves overwhelmed by the stress of the season.

But God has created us with an amazing capacity to share our life with other people. This is an opportunity for people of faith. Take a moment to look around at the people in your life and see how you can do life together. Who might be alone for much of the holiday season? Who needs a break from the busyness of the season in order to spend time with a friend? Christmas is often about presents, but this year, make it about your presence!

Blessings,
Pastor Paul Cook
