Persistent Belief

Persistent Belief

Animals are often imprinted with certain instincts from birth. Sea turtles, for example, know as soon as they are born that they need to get to the water as quickly as possible. Ducklings seem to know automatically who their mother is and that they need to follow her. Studies have shown that human babies, likewise, are apparently born knowing that their mother exists and that she will respond to their cries for food and care. For this reason, babies will expend tremendous energy crying incessantly until their needs are met. They are confident that someone will eventually respond.

Similarly, humans seem to have an innate belief in God. Even those who deny the existence of God go against an impulse that is widespread among humanity. Different cultures have developed different beliefs about God, but we share a deep longing for the divine.

Thankfully, God knows this. We may find ourselves crying out to God like an infant for its mother. But in all of life’s challenges, God hears and responds. In fact, God’s deepest desire is to have a relationship with us, to be known by us. I want to invite you to use this season of Lent as an opportunity to know God better. If it helps, step away from some of life’s distractions so that you can hear God’s voice and see God’s hand at work.

Blessings,
Pastor Paul Cook
