Mirror Image

Sometimes you hear people make statements about Jesus that are actually expressions of their own views. “Jesus wouldn’t say something like that.” “Do you really think Jesus would vote for that candidate?” “Doesn’t Jesus care about what I’m going through?”

Thankfully, the Bible does tell us a lot about Jesus, including many of the things he said and did. There is certainly a lot that we can–and should–say about Jesus with truth and confidence.

But we should also be careful not to create Jesus in our own image. Rather than assuming that Jesus looks like me, it is far better is to ask whether I look like Jesus. Do my words express the sort of thing that Jesus would say? Are my actions patterned after the life of Christ? Do others see evidence of Jesus at work in my life?
