Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a pretty big day of the year, commercially speaking. We’re told that more telephone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. And it’s supposedly the busiest day of the year for restaurants. While flowers and jewelry are popular gifts, greeting cards are the most common purchases for Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day is not a religious holiday, per se, but since it always falls on a Sunday, the occasion often involves church for many people. It tends to be the third highest Sunday of the year for church attendance, behind Christmas and Easter.
And although the commercial benefits are obvious, Mother’s Day has its roots in the church. It was started in the early 20th century by a woman who wanted to honor her mother’s memory at the Methodist church she attended. For more than a century, we have found ways to honor our mothers as part of our expression of faith.
This Mother’s Day, we remember that mothers are not perfect, but like all people, they have an amazing ability to reflect the character of God. How is God active in the lives of all the mothers around you?
Blessings,
Pastor Paul Cook
