Christians and Coronavirus

Every day brings a new level of development in the global spread of coronavirus. A short time ago, we watched from the sidelines as the illness was taking hold in China. Now, we find ourselves personally involved as it reaches closer to home.

By our very nature, Christians do not view life in the same way as the rest of the world. But at the same time, we are residents of the planet, just like everyone else. So we learn to live with a sense of tension.

On one hand, Christians are not people of fear. It’s hard not to worry in the face of an unknown future. But Christian faith is the antidote to fear that surrounds us. We are called to live in hope, counterbalancing fear with anticipation of how God will continue to be at work around us.

But on the other hand, we care about others, even in our own crisis. It’s good for us to be realistic and acknowledge our own potential to contribute to the spread of illness. So by all means, wash your hands, take measures to avoid spreading germs, and show compassion toward all who suffer.

This is a new experience for all of us. Governments, schools, businesses, healthcare providers, and other organizations are all figuring things out as we go. But our faith becomes especially critical during a time like this when we are in uncharted waters. Whatever we are going through, whatever may happen in the future, God’s got this.
