The First and the Last

The First and the Last

Several times in the New Testament book of Revelation, Jesus refers to himself as the Alpha and Omega. We can find some additional variations too, like “the first and the last,” and “the beginning and the end.” Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. In English, it would be the equivalent of saying the A and the Z.

This points to Jesus’ role across the entire breadth of history. Jesus existed at the very beginning, even before the creation of the world, and Jesus will be present when all things are brought to their culmination. Jesus is Lord over all history and experience.

But this says a lot about Jesus’ role in our life, too. Jesus was at work in our life long before any of us knew anything about him. And Jesus will be at work long after our time here on earth is finished.

Right now, all of us are ready for the coronavirus to end, but sadly, it continues to spread. We’re tired of isolating and cancelling plans, and we’d do anything to find a new normal. It’s frustrating and discouraging, but it’s helpful to know that Jesus is Lord of the beginning and Lord of the end. He was present long before this, and he is present with us now! Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega.

Blessings,

Pastor Paul Cook
