The Beginning of Change
We have all been watching as political unrest has unfolded in our divided nation. Disagreement, even about serious issues, is one thing, but we can all agree that democracy is easily threatened by violence, injustice, and grabbing for power.
Our tendency, quite honestly, is to expect the rest of the world to make the necessary changes to conform to our own interests.
But regardless of our political views, God calls us to a different way. We are to be people of humility and repentance. When things are not right in the world, our first response should be to look to the changes that God seeks to make in our own life.
As Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” But long ago, the prophet Isaiah also pointed out that change must begin with ourselves:
Wash! Be clean! Remove your ugly deeds from my sight.
Put an end to such evil; learn to do good.
Seek justice: help the oppressed; defend the orphan; plead for the widow (Isaiah 1:16-17).
At the beginning of this new year, what changes will start with you?
Blessings,
Pastor Paul Cook
