Certainty or Doubt?

Certainty or Doubt?

“In doubt there is believing” is a line from one of my favorite hymns; Hymn of Promise. This Sunday, I invite you to reconsider Thomas, a biblical scapegoat, whose name has become synonymous with a scathing reprimand to be faithful in the face of doubts. The opposite of faith is not doubt, it is certainty. Thomas was not certain, he doubted, that someone who was fully dead could come back to life. Yet, in his doubts, he still kept fellowship with the other disciples. Despite his crisis of faith, he did not step away from the faith community and even gathered with them in the room when Jesus finally revealed himself to them. Thomas wanted to believe even if he did not fully. That is the beginning of faith. This Sunday, you will hear more about Thomas and Jesus’s faithfulness. I encourage you to bring your doubts to Christ for in doing so, you will have acted in faith.
