Talk Is Cheap!

Talk Is Cheap!

1 John 3:18 (English Standard Version)

Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

“Talk is cheap” the old phrase explains something quite true. The truth is if we speak of love but don’t back it up with loving actions and in the truth of the Gospel then we are missing the mark. So often the world and many churches would say, “help people…it’s enough!” There is the idea that helping people or saying kind words in person and on social media is enough, but the last part of this scripture is key. Our loving deeds must first come from the desire to bring God glory, to make disciples who make other disciples. It is out of discipleship that we help people. Once we know the love of God and live in Christian community can we make our work of discipleship making AND helping people most effective. Surely, people who do not know the good news can be altruistic and see that it is good to feed the poor, take care of the vulnerable, visit those in prison and the like. Christians have continuity of sharing the Gospel as they are doing good and doing good in the name of Christ. Where are we missing the mark at Cornerstone Church? Is there a ministry or group that has one element but not the other? How can we integrate both concepts into those ministries?

In Christ,
