A Jealous God?
Sometimes the Bible describes God as being jealous. Typically, we view jealousy as a bad thing; we often think of jealous people–especially in relationships–as petty and insecure. There may be more appropriate English words to describe God’s devotion to us.
But aside from the negative aspects, jealousy emphasizes the extent of God’s pursuit after us. God is single-minded in his devotion to us and his desire to have a relationship with every person.
Jealousy also gets at the nature of our relationship with God sometimes. God is always faithful, but our own devotion varies. Sometimes we feel close to God, other times we distance ourselves.
This suggests an interesting possibility to ponder: What if we were jealous for God? What would my life look like if I were totally devoted to God? What would it look like for me to be single-minded in my pursuit of God?
