Sin Much?

Sin Much?

When was the last time you sinned? If you were asked that question in person, I’m guessing that you would probably laugh at the absurdity. But if pressed for a real answer, you’d probably say something vague and non-committal. We have a strange relationship with the topic of sin.

On one hand, most of us don’t want to come off to others as arrogant and self-righteous, as if we go through daily life without sinning. For that reason, we might readily admit that we do, in fact, sin. At the very least, we don’t want to appear guilty of the sin of boasting!

But on the other hand, the idea of sin makes us uncomfortable. We want to view others, and therefore ourselves, as generally good people. We’re reluctant to presume the presence of sin in any person’s life.

But if we fail to acknowledge the reality of sin, we cannot fully appreciate the depth of God’s grace. The truth is that humans are naturally inclined to sin; that’s part of being human. When we can accept this about ourselves, we begin to understand what it means to be forgiven by God.

Best of all, our acknowledgement of our human condition places us in a position of dependence on God. They say confession is good for the soul. This is how we open our lives to God’s work in us!
