Routine Maintenance

Routine Maintenance

The “Hollywood” sign is easily the most recognizable landmark in Los Angeles. It was first built in 1923 to advertise an isolated real estate development. The sign initially read “Hollywoodland,” but the -land part was dropped in 1949 as the sign evolved as an icon of both the neighborhood and the film industry.

Now approaching a hundred years old, its increasing age has required ongoing maintenance. Like all of us as the years advance, the sign needs some propping up and repair from time to time. There is now a Hollywood Sign Trust that oversees its upkeep and raises the funds (often from celebrities) to carry it out.

Everything needs ongoing care, but it’s easy for us to overlook that need in our own lives. Sometimes we keep unhealthy habits, or nurture bitterness, or we get “too busy” to spend time with God. And sometimes it shows: we experience an unanticipated health scare, we lash out at loved ones, or wonder why God seems absent. Take some time to do a self-check. What areas of your life need routine maintenance?

Blessings,
Pastor Paul Cook
